How Much Coffee Is There In Coffee Tree
How Much Coffee Is There in a Coffee Tree? Insights from SAIGONDAN
At SAIGONDAN Coffee Supply, we believe that understanding the journey from coffee tree to cup enhances our appreciation for this beloved beverage. Have you ever wondered how much coffee a single coffee tree can produce? In this article, we delve into the details of coffee harvesting, processing, and roasting to provide a clear picture of coffee production.
Harvesting Berries
On average, it takes 3-4 years from planting seeds to the first harvest of coffee berries. Once mature, a coffee tree can produce about 2-5 kilograms of berries annually. For a small farm, this translates to a harvest of approximately 1500-3000 kilograms of berries each year.
The Harvesting Process
Much of the plantation work, including berry picking, is done by hand. Picking berries is a labor-intensive and meticulous task, as it is the only way to ensure the selection of the ripest and highest-quality coffee berries.
- Method: Pickers move through the plantation, removing ripe berries and any rotten ones that can harm the trees. Unripe coffee berries are left to mature and are picked later.
- Daily Yield: On average, one worker can collect up to 150-300 kilograms of ripe berries each day.
Processing and Roasting: How Coffee Mass Is Reduced
While the initial harvest figures might seem impressive, the mass of coffee significantly decreases during processing and roasting.
- Processing: After harvesting, the berries are processed to remove the outer layers, leaving behind the coffee beans. This stage involves drying, hulling, and polishing.
-
Mass Reduction: The mass of the coffee berries is reduced by nearly tenfold during these stages. For instance, 50 kilograms of coffee berries typically yield:
- 7 kilograms of parchment coffee (beans with a papery layer still attached)
- 6 kilograms of green coffee (beans ready for roasting)
- 5 kilograms of roasted coffee
Coffee Consumption
To put this into perspective, a person needs about 7 kilograms of roasted coffee to drink two cups of coffee every day for a year. This means that the annual crop of 10 coffee trees is required to supply one individual.
Supply Per Farm:
- A small farm producing 1500-3000 kilograms of berries annually can provide enough coffee for 20-40 people for a year.
